June ’18 Wrap Up

Hey it’s me here with a wrap up for a month that ended a week ago. Do you like my Vampire duck? There is a point to him other than just being adorable which you’ll read towards the end.

Where has the time gone chicka-dees? We are now half way through the year and so far I have read a total of 32 books towards my Goodreads reading goal of 40. Think I’ll make it by the end of the year? Is the suspense too much? I explain why I set my reading goal to something so achievable for me in my blog post Is reading getting too competitive?

The month of June was so busy for me that I honestly didn’t get very much reading done. Between going on holiday (I’m weird and I don’t read on holiday), getting ready for my upcoming tour and being stuck on one of these books for about 2 weeks (I’ll tell you which one when we get there), I just didn’t set aside much extra time for reading.

51yi6wajmSL.jpgThe first book I finished in June was the new Skulduggery Pleasant book, Midnight. The new SP is always one of my book highlights each year, and this one didn’t disappoint. Anyone who is familiar with the series will know that author Derek Landy originally planned to finish the series on book nine; The Dying of the Light. But after a break of a few years and a whole other trilogy, he revamped SP and lovingly dubbed these new releases ‘Series 2’. So although this is the eleventh book in the Skulduggery Pleasant series, it is only the second book in Skulduggery Pleasant ‘Series 2’ and it is a ton better than it’s predecessor Resurrection. In Resurrection a lot of time is spent on our main character Valkyrie boohooing about her guilt and feeling sorry for herself. Which, though understandable, got a little monotonous. Fortunately there’s none of that in Midnight. We are definitely regaining the old rhythm and banter between Skulduggery and Valkyrie, and this story was definitely a lot more interesting than Resurrection. I don’t think any SP fan will be disappointed. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT YET THEN WHAT ARE YOU DOING IT IS THE BEST SERIES EVER.

The second book I finished in June was Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo. Meaning I have finally finished the original Grishaverse series. Woo! Now I just have Language of Thorns to read before I am all caught up on Ms Bardugos released works. I thought the series wrapped up nicely, despite the fact that I still think Mal should get lost, and now I am all set for King of Scars. Bring it on Leigh do your worst (please don’t do your worst you already hurt us enough in CK).

the-little-princeThe Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I hear you thinking it “this is random”. And you are right, this is very random. I had to read it in preparation for an audition I had for a play adaptation. I had never actually read it before, not even to me as a child. I’ve seen the film and it freaked me out. The book also freaked me out. Don’t get me wrong, it is a beautiful children’s book with some wise and thought provoking messages, and I would kill to own a green coat like that. But that doesn’t mean this book isn’t freaky. Space, scares me. And the idea of being stuck alone on a tiny planet in the middle of space scares me. I just don’t like the idea ok, it makes me anxious.

y648.jpgOnyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett. THIS is the book that stole two reading weeks from me. AND I DIDN’T EVEN FINISH IT. After two weeks I was like nope, sorry, can’t do it. It got to a point where I didn’t even care about the time I’d wasted on it anymore. I had to stop for my sanity. It wasn’t necessarily a bad book. A bad book may have been more entertaining than this. This was just boring. If you would like to know more about my thoughts, I wrote a short review before I left for my holiday which you can read here.

41K99+cInvL._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_.jpgTwilight by Stephanie Meyer. Oh boy. Okay, so I’ve never read this before now. But I heard a wee rumour going around in the ‘bookisphere’ on twitter that Vampires are making a comeback. I love Vampires. In fact, if I was offered the opportunity I would probably become one. But I haven’t read a whole load of Vampire fiction so I figured ‘Well, if this rumour is true, then I’d better start from the very beginning (a very good place to start)’. Now, I’ve already read Dracula. So the next logical step was Twilight. This was exactly what I needed after zzzzfest Onyx and Ivory. I have two sayings about books like Twilight. The first is: “It’s okay to read trash, as long as you know it’s trash” and the second is: “Just because a book is trash, doesn’t mean it isn’t a good book”. Die hard twilight fans, please don’t hunt me. I truly had SO much fun reading it. I’ll probably pick up the next three as well, why the hell not. I know it’s fashionable to hate these books without ever having read them, but I think those people should get over themselves. These books are not parading around as anything other than what they are. Stephanie Meyer does not claim to be Shakespeare. She is writing fun and easy to read vampire romance for young adults. You’re not meant to take it too seriously. In fact if you are reading this, and you have a socially built-in bias against Twilight but have never read it – I challenge you to go and pick up a copy for £2 from your local charity shop (because we all know there will be a copy there) and just unwind to some angsty teen vampire romance. It may well break you out of your reading slump.

So there it is for you lovelies – my severely varied and very dodgy month in reading for you. I know I didn’t include a load of life things that happened to me this month but I do have a couple of posts you can check out if you’d like to nose about my life:
